Sheet mulching seminars, free to the public, offered in March
05 March 2009
BERKELEY — The UC Berkeley grounds department is offering free, hands-on seminars on how to sheet mulch. Sheet mulching is a sustainable alternative to pesticides/herbicides for weed control, using cardboard and mulch to suppress unwanted plants. It can be used for native-plant restoration, as well as for gardening or converting a lawn to a different use.
Classes are open to the public and will be held on three consecutive Saturdays. (You only need to attend one session to learn the basics of sheet mulching; the third class focuses especially on lawn conversion, though the basics will be covered.) Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Free lunch will be provided after the session.
All sessions will be 10 a.m. to noon, on the following dates:
• Saturday, March 14 — Weed suppression for plant restoration and gardening
Meet at the circle behind Dwinelle Hall, next to the Dwinelle Annex
• Saturday, March 21 — Weed suppression for plant restoration and gardening
Meet at the circle behind Dwinelle Hall, next to the Dwinelle Annex
• Saturday, March 28 — Lawn conversion
Meet in the parking lot between Hilgard and Gianinni Halls.
Gloves and tools will be provided. Close-toed shoes are required, as well as non-restrictive, durable clothing. Come prepared to do light-to-moderate gardening work. Seminars will take place rain or shine.
Space is limited to 30 people. To register, e-mail Michaeltyoung@gmail.com.
