Next Week at UC Berkeley -- Sept. 15 through 21 Events of interest to the press and public

Monday, Sept. 15 Plight and Conservation of Cheetahs in the Serengeti Subject of Campus Lecture

Cheetahs, the rarest of all the large cats in Africa, are continually victimized by larger predators, such as hyenas and lions, who kill cheetah cubs, steal kill and sometimes attack adults.

Dr. Sarah Durant, a scientist with the Zoological Society of London, feels that understanding the relationship between cheetahs and their enemies is the key to the future of the world's fastest land animal and will be on campus to discuss her 20 years of research. Tuesday, Sept. 16

Former U.S. Senator Alan K. Simpson Reflects on Life in Public Service

Alan Kooi Simpson, who served in the U.S. Senate for 18 years, will be on campus to discuss his service in both federal and state government at 4:10 p.m. in the Lipman Room of Barrows Hall.

Simpson, son of a former governor and U.S. Senator, served in the Wyoming House of Representatives before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1978. During his tenure he served as Republican whip and was a member of the Judiciary and Environment and Public Works Committees.

"Reflections on a Life in Public Service" is this year's Jefferson Memorial Lecture and is sponsored by the Graduate Division. (Media Contact: Teresa Malango (510) 643-7413)

Friday-Saturday, Sept. 19-20

Alums and Friends Convene for Activity-Filled Homecoming and Reunion Weekend

Lectures, football, picnics and art await as more than a thousand alumni and their families descend upon the campus for the premiere of an all new, integrated homecoming and reunion celebration.

Activities include "Inside Cal," a lively series of lectures by UC Berkeley professors, the "Fun Zone," a giant picnic at Kleeberger Field preceding the Cal vs. Oklahoma football on Saturday, Sept. 20, and a keynote address by Chancellor Robert Berdahl on Friday, Sept. 19 at 1:30 p.m. in Wheeler Hall. Other events include receptions, tours, open houses and free admission to campus museums.
