Quantum Corp. endows physics fellowship
at UC Berkeley in honor of late CTO and Cal alumnus Kenneth Lee

BERKELEY--The University of California, Berkeley, announced this week that Quantum Corp. of Milpitas, Calif., has made a $500,000 gift to the campus's Department of Physics to endow a graduate fellowship in memory of the late Kenneth Lee, the company's former executive vice president and chief technology officer.
Lee was a native of Oakland and attended UC Berkeley, where he received his undergraduate and doctorate degrees in physics. At the time of his death of a heart attack on Jan. 1, 1999, Lee had been at Quantum for 10 years, where he earned a reputation as an technological visionary and a respected manager and leader.
"Ken Lee made many significant contributions to Quantum," said Michael Brown, Quantum chairman and chief executive officer. "His death was a great loss to us as a company and to his many co-workers as a friend. We knew at the time that we wanted to honor his memory in an appropriate way. This fellowship grant is a fitting memorial, and we are pleased to present the gift to fund it."
Quantum's gift to the physics department is the first fully-endowed corporate fellowship in the department's history.
"We're grateful for the opportunity to work with Quantum Corporation to establish this fellowship as a memorial to Ken Lee," said physics department chair Roger Falcone. "After graduating from our department, Dr. Lee went on to become a leader in magnetic recording technologies and related fields, which have taken on critical importance in today's information-based world.
"We're particularly pleased that Quantum has endowed this fellowship to help Berkeley support generations of physics students in their studies. This fellowship will be a significant factor in helping us carry on our tradition of training future science and business leaders."
