A message from Berkeley

To Members of the Cal Family

I want to convey a special message to all of you around the world and most particularly to those in New York and in Washington D.C.

The entire campus community is deeply saddened by the devastating attacks that occurred today. Since that time, we have been working diligently to ensure the security of our students, faculty, and staff. The campus has remained open, and I can report that the mood is calm and reflective in the wake of these events. By remaining open, we can offer our students—particularly those who arrived for the first time on campus only a couple weeks ago—a safe and supportive environment.

I also believe that by staying open, Berkeley can fulfill its responsibility to be a beacon of rational thought and reasoned discourse in a nation and a world that has been darkened by today's horrific events. This is our stand against violence and terror and our best way of honoring and mourning its victims.

Uppermost in our minds are those of you in the areas that were struck and those who have family and friends there. We do not yet know the fate of all members of our Cal Family. As we wait and do what we can, we can only continue to hope that the news will be encouraging. Although we are many miles away from many of you, I would like you to know that Cal is with you in thought and in spirit.

Fiat Lux.

Sincerely,

Robert M. Berdahl
Chancellor
