As the first light of day sparkles on the waters of Hearst Pool, a communion of morning swimmers brings the pool to life. The rooftop pool and terrace deck, designed by architect Julia Morgan in the style of her famed Neptune Pool at Hearst Castle, is surfaced in green-streaked white marble, flanked by columns, and provides the illusion of an ancient temple site. Located on campus at the Hearst Memorial Gym which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the pool is just one of the many Cal Recreational Sports program venues and activities open to Cal students, faculty, staff, and the community. Facilities include four pools; seven indoor basketball courts; four weight rooms; two outdoor tracks; tennis, racquetball, handball and squash courts; and over 100 group exercise classes per week ranging from yoga to studio cycling to cardio kickboxing.
