Portuguese Pact Begins Program

A new Portuguese Studies Program was launched Oct. 17 with the signing of a cooperative agreement between the campus and Portugal's Luso-American Foundation.

Richard Buxbaum, dean of International and Area Studies, and Rui Chancerelle de Machete, president of the Luso-American Foundation, signed the agreement.

The Luso-American Foundation is a private, non-profit institution founded by the Portuguese government to promote cooperation between Portugal and the US in the fields of business, education, science, technology, and culture.

Its goal is to increase awareness and cooperation between the two countries by supporting initiatives that foster the development of Portugal's social, economic, and cultural fabric.

The new program will promote and support studies that are related to Portugal and act as a clearinghouse for information about faculty and student research, lectures, and courses and other activities about Portugal and Portuguese Studies both on and off campus.

It also will provide means to disseminate such information to Portuguese universities and other interested organizations.

The program will organize conferences and sponsor and promote lectures and colloquia on campus by visitors from Portugal or specialists on topics related to Portugal and to the Portuguese-American community.

The Luso-American Development Foundation also will work with International and Area Studies to help foster and further exchanges of students and faculty between Berkeley and Portuguese universities.

The foundation will sponsor the program during its initial phase, but it is expected that the program will draw on other sources in future years and attract the interest of research foundations and Portuguese-American communities nationwide.

The new program will have a chair and an executive committee composed of Berkeley researchers or faculty members actively interested in Portuguese studies.

Its board of advisers will include representatives from the Luso-American Development Foundation and other organizations that support the program as well as faculty members from Portuguese universities.
