Children's Summer Programs

The Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Dependent Care has collected the following information on programs for children that will be offered on campus this summer. Below is a list of these programs, their deadlines and registration.

Young Musicians Program

Provides musically gifted students from low income families with a comprehensive music education on a full scholarship basis. Successful students from the summer session receive scholarships for private lessons during the academic year.

Dates and Times: June 17-Aug. 4, 7:30 am-5 pm, M-F.

Age Range: 11-17 years old.

Price/Financial Assistance: Full scholarships.

Registration Dates: Applications are available now and due March 4; auditions are March 30-31.

Special Requirements: Students must be from low income families.

MESA Summer Academy (Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement)

MESA is an academic enrichment program that focuses on math and science.

Dates and Times: June 17- July 26, 9 am-5 pm, M-F.

Age Range: Entering 7th grade-12th grade (12-17 years old).

Price/Financial Assistance: $600 for summer program; financial aid is available.

Registration Dates: Application packets will be available mid-February.

Special Requirements: MESA is intended for historically under represented students; however, for summer academy any interested student should apply.

UC Berkeley Academic Talent Program

The program offers intellectually challenging summer school classes to motivated students from kindergarten through 11th grade.

Elementary Division: Each July, students in grade K-6 attend classes at a school site near the Berkeley campus and explore academic areas not normally offered at their regular schools.

Secondary Division: Young scholars in grades 7 to 11 come to the Berkeley campus for a six-week summer session of challenging and stimulating classes, designed for both academic acceleration and enrichment.

Secondary Division, June 17-July 26.

Age Range:

Elementary Division, Grades K-6.

Secondary Division, Grades 7-12.

Price/Financial Assistance:

Elementary Division, $330

Secondary Division, $330 for 5 units, $490 for 10 units.

(Excludes application and materials fees.) Some financial aid is available.

Lawrence Hall Of Science

Lawrence Hall of Science offers five separate summer programs for children.

LHS Science Day Camps

LHS offers half-day Science Day Camps with fun activities to explore everything from computers to chemistry to crime solving.

Dates and Times: June 17-Aug. 23.

Age Range: 6-14 years old.

Price/Financial Assistance: Fees vary by program.

LHS/SCRA Full-day Adventure Camps

LHS and Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area team up to offer full-day, two-week programs in which campers spend half the day as science explorers and half the day as active athletes.

Age Range: 6-11 years old.

Price/Financial Assistance: Fees vary by program.

LHS Summer Science Camps

LHS offers four week-long residential camps in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Sierra Nevada and Trinity Alps that combine outdoor science explorations with swimming, hiking, stargazing, crafts and games.

Age Range: 8-14 years old.

LHS Summer Science Classes

LHS offers six sessions of summer classes that meet for an hour each day, over 4, 5 or 10 days, featuring hands-on activities and classes on animals, astronomy, computers, art, bubbles and more.

Age Range: 3-18 years old.

Price/Financial Assistance: Fees vary by program.

Summer Fun at LHS

The university's hands-on science center is open daily, 10 am-5 pm, with interactive exhibits, daily planetarium shows, live animals to touch and observe in the LHS Biology Lab, and special family events each week.

Dates and Times: Summer schedule of daily programs, discovery lab, planetarium shows; June 17-Aug. 23.

Age Range: All ages.

Price/Financial Assistance: Admission fees are $2-6; children under 3 are free.

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's Science Exploration Camp

The camp provides science enrichment classes in the morning and recreational activities in the afternoon. Based at LBNL, the camp will include activities both on- and off-site.

Dates and Times: Full-time for four to six weeks at the end of the summer.

Age Range: Ages 6 to 12.

Price: $140 a week (estimated).

Registration Dates: Information about the program will be available after March 1.

Special Requirements: Employees of LBNL receive priority for enrollment.

Young Entrepreneurs at Berkeley

East Bay Outreach Project at the Haas School Of Business

A cost-free, year-long, entrepreneurial training and mentoring program for high school students teaching the basics of starting and running a business.

Dates and Times:

Phase I: Two weeks summer session, end of July through mid-August, including classroom instruction, guest speakers and field trips.

Phase II: September-May during the school year, each participant is paired with an MBA graduate student mentor who works with him or her to complete a business plan. In the spring, after attending additional business workshops, participants are given the opportunity to present their business plan to the Venture Capital Board. Successful plans receive funding to start a business.

Age Range: 9th through 12th grade high school students from Berkeley, Oakland and Richmond are eligible to apply.

Price/Financial Assistance: No-cost curriculum, materials, transportation to and from field-trips and some meals during Phase I provided. Program is especially looking for economically disadvantaged youth with good ideas for a potential businesses.

English Language Program Of UCB Extension

Youth English Adventure offers courses for international youth who want to improve their English skills and enhance their cross cultural awareness.

Dates and Times: July 15-Aug. 2,

English classes in the mornings and cultural activities and sports instruction in the afternoons.

Age Range: 14-17 years old.

Price/Financial Assistance: $1,975.

Prices include tuition, housing and board, and a three-day camping trip to Yosemite.

Special Requirements: Classes are for students of beginning and intermediate proficiency in English. Participants should like sports, outdoor activities and meeting students from other cultures.

Cal Adventures

Cal Adventures' Youth Outdoor Program offers half-day and full-day courses ranging from sea kayaking, sailing and white water rafting to backpacking, rock climbing and first aid throughout the year.

Dates and Times: Year-round activities; weekdays and weekends, half-day and full-day.

Age Range: Youth ages 8 to 17, depending on activity.

Price/Financial Assistance: Varies depending on the activity. Financial assistance is plentiful. Anyone interested in the program is encouraged to pick up an application from the main office.

Special Requirements: Swimming ability is required for all youth participating in aquatic courses.

Botanical Garden Summer Day Camp

The Botanical Garden offers a summer day camp for five weekly sessions in July and August for the study of nature and related activities.

Dates and Times:

July 8-12, 5-7 year olds.

July 15-19, 8-11 year olds.

July 22-26, 5-7 year olds.

July 29 - Aug. 2, 8-11 year olds.

Aug. 5-9, 5-7 year olds.

Age Range: See above listings.

Price/Financial Assistance: $125/week. There is a 10 percent discount for two or more children from the same family during the summer.

Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports

Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area (SCRA)

Spring break and summer youth programs for ages 4-15. Full-day (9 am-4 pm) or half-day sessions and extended care are available. Fees vary for all programs. Registration is until filled. Features arts and crafts, basketball, drama, fencing, hockey, lacrosse, nature studies, soccer, softball, swimming, taekwondo, tennis.

Spring Break Camps

Dates and Times:

Two one-week sessions, April 1-5 and April 8-12.

Age Range: Ages 4-7.

Explorer Camp

Dates and Times: Two-week sessions, June 3-July 12 and July 22-Aug. 16.

Age Range: Ages 4-7.

Blue Camp

Dates and Times: Two four-week sessions, June 17-July 12 and July 22-Aug. 16.

Age Range: Ages 8 -11.

Gold Camp

Dates and Times: Two-week sessions between June 17-July 12 and July 22-Aug. 16.

Age Range: Ages 12-15.

Specialty Camps:

One activity: archery, cheerleading, drama, fencing, golf, tennis and more.

Dates and Times: Half-day sessions 9 am-12 pm or 1-4 pm, July 15-19.

Age Range: Ages 4-15.

Final Tribute

Two one-week sessions of varied activities, full or half day, extended care available.

Dates and Times: Aug 19-30.

Age Range: Ages 4-15.

Swimming Lessons

SCRA/LHS Adventure Camp

SCRA/Academic Talent Development Program

SCRA offers a half-day sport camp in conjunction with the School of Education's Academic Talent Development Program. Highly motivated students come from all over the Bay Area to participate in a variety of stimulating and challenging classes. Students who enroll in both the programs have a full day of activity and balance between academics and sports.

Information On Community Summer Schools and Camps

The annual Summer School and Summer Camp Fair sponsored by the Association of Academic and University Women takes place this year Saturday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Temple, 1547 Lakeside Dr., Oakland.

This fair includes representatives from summer school and camp programs.
