Book Your Travel Via Computer

Travel Management has established direct booking capabilities via the Internet at http://www.itn.net/berkeley. This new travel reservation system allows users to do price searches, check and print out schedules and flight availabilities, and book flights.

The web site includes detailed instructions for using the computer reservation system and understanding the displays. The "Travel Flash" section, still under construction, will serve as an advisory center on such topics as fare wars, promotions, bargains and policy changes.

The web site also provides links to many resources, including WebWeather, Train Travel and others. At this time, Southwest bookings are not available through the computer reservation system, although Southwest expects to be connected within 60 days.

For more information, contact Terri McVickers at 642-0438 or mcvicker@uclink.

Southwest Discounts

Southwest Airlines is now offering members of the campus a 40 percent discount on coach fares for intra-California flights, with a 50 percent discount for Irvine. This is a trial program, effective through July 31. The fares are for business travel only and are available by booking through Miller Gove Northbrae Travel Management (MGN) in Emeryville, 654-5290, or Philip Martin Associates (PMA) in Oakland, 444-5250.

Blood Drive Reminder

The campus community is encouraged to participate in a blood drive sponsored by the benefits unit and conducted by the Blood Bank of the Alameda-Contra Costa Medical Association.

The drive has been scheduled for Friday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Tan Oak, East and West Madrone rooms of the King Student Union. To sign up, call the Blood Bank at (800) 841-1986, ext. 6270.

Nominate Top Staff

Nominations are open through April 12 for the Chancellor's Outstanding Staff awards to be presented May 8 at Alumni House.

The award is one of the highest honors presented to staff members by Chancellor Tien, and exemplifies outstanding achievement carrying out the university's mission.

Recipients will be selected by the Chancellor's Staff Advisory Committee. All Berkeley staff except executive tier administrators and those with academic titles are eligible. Individuals or teams may be nominated and nominations need not come from nominee's supervisor or department.

For information, call Eric Ellisen, 643-9719, or Abram Hardin, 642-2241.

Mentors Needed

The Staff Mentorship Program is in need of mentors for Berkeley High School students. No special experience is required, just a willingness to share knowledge, experience and skills with a high school student. Interested staff should call Leon Schmidt at 642-3362 (mornings) or 642-5215 (afternoons).

Statistical Consulting

The Department of Statistics operates a drop-in consulting service for researchers. Advanced graduate students under faculty supervision provide consultation on Mondays from 1 to 3. pm. and Thursdays from noon to 2 p.m. through May 9.

Researchers are encouraged to drop in for statistical advice at any stage of their research. However, consultants can be especially helpful in the design stage of research, so the earlier in the research process, the better.

While not required, the recommendation is to write a short description (one paragraph to two pages) describing the research problem and send it ahead of the consultation to Andrew Gelman, gelman@stat, or to Consulting Service, Department of Statistics, 367 Evans Hall.
