A Salute to the Tiens

Chang-Lin and Di-Hwa Tien's years as the chancellor and first lady of the campus will be celebrated in music, dance and reminiscences at a special salute at Zellerbach Auditorium Friday, Feb. 21, at 8 p.m.

The event, "A Cal Family Tribute to Chancellor and Mrs. Tien," is being produced by a coalition of alumni, students, faculty and staff to showcase the excellence and diversity of Berkeley that are hallmarks of Tien's tenure. The evening will feature performances by the Cal Band, campus orchestras, ensembles, vocal and dance groups, and personal anecdotes by people who have known and worked with the Tiens.

Admission is free, but tickets are required and are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Zellerbach box office.

A pre-event reception will be held as well. Proceeds from the reception -- and contributions from others who wish to participate -- will go toward an endowed Alumni Leadership Scholarship honoring Chang-Lin and Di-Hwa Tien. The $150-per-person reception includes wine and hors d'oeuvres, priority seating for the tribute and an opportunity to talk personally with the Tiens. For information, call Mei-Mei Hong, 642-1982.

CSAC Seeks Members

The Chancellor's Staff Advisory Committee, CSAC, is recruiting new members. Interviews will be held in late January.

CSAC is a group of staff who advise the chancellor on non-bargainable issues. Members are appointed by the chancellor, and serve three-year terms.

Among the committee's accomplishments are establishment of the Staff Ombuds Office, Staff Appreciation Day and the campuswide report "Doing Less with Less."

The chancellor supports release time to attend bi-weekly meetings with permission of your supervisor. Additional time is required.

Career staff are invited to apply. Contact Keiko Kubo, 643-5978, Abram Hardin, 652-2241 or Eric Ellisen, 643-9719.

Masks of Venice

With approximately 70 works, the Berkeley Art Museum explores the role of masking in 18th century Venetian art and society in "The Mask of Venice," an exhibit running Dec. 11 to March 2. The focal point of the exhibition is the art of Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770), whose 300th birthday the exhibition celebrates.

The show looks at the role of masking in everyday 18th century Venetian life, where festivals and celebrations were dominant characteristics of urban life, and where the adoption of a mask or costume allowed citizens to escape the rigid social hierarchy.

Management Skills

The 1997 Management Skills Assessment Program is now welcoming applications. This systemwide management development program aims to improve on-the-job performance, help participants compete successfully for management positions and provide an agenda for career development.

The program takes place at Asilomar conference center in Pacific Grove from June 3 to 6.

Participants will demonstrate and evaluate management skills, receive feedback on their performance from university managers and offer feedback to other participants.

Afterwards, participants work with supervisors to identify activities toward ongoing career development and participate in campus/laboratory follow-up sessions.

Applicants must currently be at level AAIII to MSOII and involved in supervising staff or in frequent interactions with groups of staff.

Application deadline is Feb. 10 at 9 a.m. Employee Development and Training, 642-8134, has applications and brochures.

Science Toys at LHS

For holiday shoppers, the Lawrence Hall of Science Discovery Corner Store offers many new products -- among them a supersonic ear that enables you to listen to birds, insects and other targeted sounds; kits for making your own chocolate or gum; a battery-operated, hand-held tornado; and a selection of materials for the teachers on your list. The store is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A Charity Update

As the semester draws to a close, the campus is winding up the Berkeley Charitable Campaign. As of early December, 307 people had pledged contributions of $80,470.

Of that, more than $27,000 has been designated for the Berkeley Pledge. The campus goal is to raise $200,000.

Chancellor Tien officially kicked off the campaign at half-time during the Arizona football game on Nov. 2. The football that he kicked will be given to the department with the highest percentage of participation in the campaign.

If you would like to participate but need to obtain the forms to do so or if you need more information, call 642-0702.

Campus Email Policies Available Online

Campus email users are encouraged to check out three web sites that outline UC and campus computer and email policies.

The University of California Electronic Mail Policy went into effect in August. Each campus is required to develop implementation procedures and practices.

See the UC email policy and campus implementation sites at: http://www.ucop.edu/ucophome/policies/email/email.html and http://uas.berkeley.edu:7355/emailpol/

In addition, the web site for information on the campus's Computer Use Policy, which governs use of all campus computing and newwork resources is http://uas.berkeley. edu:7355/policy/usepolicy.html

Stickers to be Eliminated From Student ID Cards

A student registration validation sticker affixed to the Cal photo ID is a thing of the past.

Effective spring semester 1997, the Office of the Registrar will discontinue issuing the familiar sticker, replacing it with an electronic verification system.

Staff from Vice Chancellor Genaro Padilla's office and from the Office of the Registrar worked over the summer to develop electronic alternatives to the registration sticker.

They consulted broadly across campus to ensure that all units validation needs are met, to improve convenience and services for students, and to reduce fraud.

"Growing concern over the widespread fraudulent use of stickers led the Office of the Registrar to an investigation of options for a more reliable and secure method of registration validation," said Associate Registrar Jack Farrell.

"Continuing developments in computer technology, especially the advent of the World Wide Web, made the system-based solutions feasible," he said.

There are now two electronic options to verify registration.

First, registration status information will be available to all users at web site http://registrar.berkeley.edu:4202/regweb.html.

By entering a student ID number (using key strokes, bar code, or magnetic stripe) or name in the designated field, the user will call up a display indicating the registration status of that student. The source of the information is a database that is updated daily.

The second option is for units that have their own data systems. A daily update file of registration status changes will be provided to these units for downloading into their systems.

With current information in their own databases, the units can implement their own procedures for validating current registration.

Student discounts at local stores and access to facilities, such as the ASUC Underground, that have in the past required a current registration validation sticker, will now be granted on the basis of possession of the Cal photo ID only.

Questions or comments about the new registration validation processes should be directed to Farrell at 643-1640 or email, jrf@uclink4.

Annual Window Nears for Vehicle Purchases

Departments interested in purchasing new vehicles during the 1997 calendar year should contact Fleet Services to place their orders.

Fleet services can assist departments in determining the best vehicle for their needs. For more information or to obtain a form, contact Eric Robinson at 643-6596 or ericjr@garnet.berkeley.edu.

The deadline for placing orders through the state contract varies according to make and model, but the majority of manufacturer's cut-off dates are in March.

Use of the contract is mandated by California's planned purchasing agreements. Campus departments must adhere to the contract and various ordering windows.

Departments that miss the 1997 ordering window must wait until the next ordering window opens in January 1998.
