UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT BERKELEY

From Slide Rules to Computers

Celebrating 50th anniversaries as Berkeley faculty members this year are professors emeritus Werner Goldsmith, Joseph Frisch and Edmur V. Laitone of mechanical engineering.

"When I arrived in 1947, we were doing drawings in India ink," Frisch recalls. "And we were still teaching students how to use slide rules."

Advances in computer technology over the past half century have revolutionized mechanical engineering research, agrees Goldsmith, whose history of the department will be published this month.

The trio was honored at a reception the afternoon of Monday, April 28, where each received a small gift of appreciation from the department.
