A Calendar on the Web
Debuts on August 25

A new online events calendar will be unveiled Monday, Aug. 25, on Berkeley's home page. The calendar, a joint effort between Public Affairs and Information Systems and Technology, is designed to give the public and the campus community easier, long-range access to information about campus events.

The calendar, which will replace the current Gopher calendar, offers many new features. The long-range calendar will list events through the year 2000 and beyond. This will help departments plan future events and allow visitors to schedule their campus visits. Event organizers should submit listings to the calendar as far in advance as possible.

A search capability has been built into the calendar, which browsers can use to find events unique to their interests. By entering specific information, such as a date, sponsor or keyword, the calendar's search engine will scan the event database and retrieve only those events that match selected criteria.

The calendar web site opens with a highlights page that includes brief summaries and graphics for three to four special events per week. This page will serve as an additional forum for departments and units to publicize upcoming events. Campus groups are encouraged to contact the calendar editor with suggestions for the highlights page.

By early October, campus departments, units, student groups and organizations will be able to add events to the calendar using a form on the web site. This will alleviate the need for sponsors to send event information via campus mail or email. The calendar editor will be available for workshops to assist departments in using the add form.

After events are added by departments, they will be proofread by the calendar editor. Groups adding events must adhere to the terms and conditions of the calendar, which will be posted on the web site. Listings are subject to editing.

Because the new calendar will be updated every 24 hours, departments can post last-minute schedule changes. Calendar listings will include links to event sponsor home pages where applicable.

Events for the Berkeleyan calendar will be taken from the online calendar database, so there is no need for departments to send duplicate event announcements for the Berkeleyan calendar.

The address for the web calendar will be http://www.berkeley.edu/calendar/. For more information about the new calendar, contact Lyn Hunter, campus calendar editor, at 643-0705 or email: dlh@pio.urel.berkeley.edu.
