A team headed by Sam Davis, professor of architecture and founding principal of Davis & Joyce Architects, has designed the nation's first housing specifically for homeless youth with HIV and AIDS.

Once a bunker-like concrete shell among grim surroundings, the new Larkin St. Youth Center Assisted Care and Aftercare Facility at 129 Hyde St. in San Francisco includes 12 individual living units as well a center for youth who come for meals, counseling, health care and companionship. Input of staff, community and future residents was integral to the design process.

The building was dedicated Oct. 15. Members of the Davis & Joyce design team, all Berkeley graduates, are Sam Davis, '69; Lisa Joyce, '87; Carolyn Greis, '93; and Kevin Kodama, '89.
