Chancellor Berdahl and Rector Vasco Garcia, a founder of the University of the Azores, signed an agreement of cooperation between Berkeley and the University of the Azores Wednesday, March 11.
Dean Richard Buxbaum of International and Area Studies and Professor Richard Herr, chair of the Portuguese Studies Program, who initiated the agreement, said it will lead to faculty, research and graduate student exchanges between the two campuses in areas such as marine sciences, biology, environmental engineering and Portuguese literature and culture.
Established in 1976, the University of the Azores enrolls some 2,400 students on three campuses. The main campus is at Ponta Delgada, the islands largest town.
