Berkeley Administrative Initiatives
by By Kathleen Phillips Satz, Berkeley Administrative Initiatives
The Berkeley Administrative Initiatives the new Berkeley Financial System and Human Resources Management System will be phased in beginning with Purchasing and Accounts Payable in January 1999.
On the recommendation of the BAI Steering Committee, the Chancellors Cabinet approved an implementation schedule that provides campus users of the new computer systems with some immediate benefits, since purchasing and accounts payable are common tasks.
These two modules will be implemented in central offices, plus selected campus departments, on Jan. 1, 1999, using the old Chart of Accounts. Remaining campus departments will be phased onto the new system during the following six months.
On July 1, 1999, the new Chart of Accounts and the General Ledger will become effective.
Initially, central offices will be on line with the new General Ledger; campus departments will be phased in over the following six months. In the fall of 1999, the Human Resources Management System will be implemented in the same way.
Details of this overall timeline, along with associated training, will be announced on the BAI web site (http://www.bai.berkeley.edu/bai), in future Berkeleyan articles, and through the control unit structure now in place for BAI communications. (See next weeks Berkeleyan for a question-and-answer article on the BAI project, with Chancellor Berdahl and Vice Chancellor Horace Mitchell.)
Campus demonstrations of the HRMS were offered in late April, and demos of the Purchasing and Accounts Payable modules of BFS will take place on May 13 and 14, from 10 a.m. to noon, in Sibley Auditorium. Staff from Financial and Business Services will provide information on basic processes in the new software. No pre-enrollment is required; seating will be first come, first served.
