Post-Doctoral Fellows Form New Association

By Cathy Cockrell, Public Affairs
posted September 30, 1998

Campus postdoctoral fellows held an initial organizing meeting of the Berkeley Postdoctoral Association Monday, Sept. 21, to approve a charter and mission statement and elect temporary officers.

The new association hopes to foster interaction among postdocs and enhance professional development (such as job seeking, lab management, grant writing and public speaking skills) for the 800 to 1,000 postdocs working on campus, said Linda McPheron, coordinator of postdoctoral affairs for the Graduate Education Research Unit.

Those present at the meeting elected Carolyn Malmstrom, a postdoc working in Environmental Science, Policy & Management, to serve as president and Kathleen Sullivan, from Molecular and Cell Biology, as treasurer until the organization holds a general election next spring.

The group also formed five committees to focus on research and career, information, policy, social and family life issues, which postdocs have identified as key to their experience here on campus.

Campus postdocs who wish to be notified of workshops and other developments relevant to postdoc life may add their email addresses to a list McPheron is compiling. She may be reached at mcpheron@nature.berkeley.edu or 643-2792.

For updates on the Berkeley Postdoctoral Association (including date and location of upcoming meetings), postdocs may subscribe to the posdocNET mailing list by emailing majordomo@list-link.berkeley.edu. Include in the body of the message the words "subscribe postdocnet."
