Briefs 1998-99 Lili Fabilli/Eric Hoffer Essay Topic Announced The topic for the 1998-99 Lili Fabilli/Eric Hoffer Essay Contest is "Brushstrokes." This is the only competition administered by the Committee on Prizes that is open to faculty and staff as well as students. Approximately $2,000 in prizes will be awarded. The deadline for submissions, which must be hand delivered to the Prizes office at 210 Sproul Hall, is Jan. 29, 1999. Women's Lacrosse Elevated to Varsity Sport Officially added as a varsity sport April 21, the Cal women's lacrosse team will begin NCAA intercollegiate competition this spring. Jill Malko, who led the Cal women's lacrosse club team to consecutive Western Women's Lacrosse League Championships in 1996 and '97, has been named head coach of the new varsity program. Malko's Golden Bears have posted a 30-4 league record over the past three seasons. Malko captained the lacrosse squad at Boston University in the '80s.
Environmental Law Expert to Give Jefferson Lecture Carol Rose, professor of law and organization at Yale University, will discuss "Property and Expropriation: Themes and Variations in American Law" for the 1998 Jefferson Memorial Lecture, Thursday, Oct. 29. One of the country's leading environmental law scholars and author of several influential books on the subject, Rose is former chair of Yale's Property and Environmental Law program and of Law and Public Policy at Northwestern University. She received her PhD in history from Cornell and has taught at Stanford and Boalt Hall. The free lecture is at 4:10 p.m. in the Lipman Room, Barrows Hall, 8th floor. Nov. 9: Publishing in the New Russia Two prominent Russian journalists will speak on "Culture, Journalism and Entrepreneurship in Russia Today," Monday, Nov. 9, at 4 p.m. in the Toll Room of Alumni House. Their presentation is the 15th annual Colin Miller Memorial Lecture. Journalist Masha Lipman is deputy chief editor of Itogi, a popular new weekly news journal published by Newsweek. Irina Prokhorova is editor and founder of the New Literary Review, which combines literary criticism and cultural essays with bold graphic designs.
