Developing Leadership Skills of Campus Managers

by Julia Sommer, Public Affairs
posted October 28, 1998

A new Leadership Development Program (LDP) for staff -- replacing and improving on the Management Academy -- will be launched in January by Human Resources' Employee Development and Training unit (EDT). The application deadline is Nov. 23.

LDP is an 18-month program for 40 participants at the AAIII-Supervisor through Management and Senior Professional level that will require about eight hours per month in class and teamwork.

"LDP will give Berkeley employees an integrated approach to developing and strengthening core management competencies," according to program coordinator Ellie Schindelman.

Those competencies include change facilitation, communication, leadership, people management, resource management, collaboration, critical thinking, organizational acumen, planning and service orientation.

The program takes participants through assessment exercises, a custom course of skills development and a three-month analytical project.

Each participant's contribution of $500 (paid by his or her department) helps offset the program cost of $2,500 per person. Additional funding is provided by the Office of the President and EDT.

The new Leadership Development Program joins two existing, system-wide employee development opportunities: the Management Skills Assessment Program (to be held May 2-7, 1999) and the Professional Skills Assessment Program (March 21-26, 1999).

"Together, these programs will build leadership excellence for UC Berkeley's future," says Schindelman.

LDP participants will develop insights about their management skills and a more complete view of themselves within the context of their departments, says Schindelman. They will also broaden their understanding of the University through interaction with other campus employees.

A committee representing the major campus control units will select LDP participants by mid-December. Selection criteria include initiative, a strong performance record, proven ability to learn from new experiences, commitment to long-term university employment and the 18-month program, strong support from supervisor and department, and a compelling statement on why the staff member wants to participate.
