Lecture and Reading by South African Novelist

posted November 4, 1998

South African author J.M. Coetzee will present a lecture and a reading during his weeklong visit as the Townsend Center for the Humanities' Una's Lecturer.

On Wednesday, Nov. 11, Coetzee lectures on "The Novel in Africa" at 8 p.m. in 315 Wheeler Hall. He will read from his recently published book, "Boyhood," Thursday, Nov. 12 at 4 p.m. in 220 Stephens Hall.

Born of Afrikaans and English parentage and educated in both South Africa and the United States, Coetzee writes from within a modern context of colonialism and imperialism. His novels and essays have made a major contribution to passionate debates raised by racial politics in South Africa.

His works have been translated into more than 20 languages and his novel "The Life and Times of Michael K," won the Booker Prize in 1983.

Una's Lectures in the Humanities are endowed in the memory of Una Smith Ross, class of 1911 and are administered by the Townsend Center.
