New Doctoral Program in Dramatic Art Debuts

posted November 4, 1998

A new PhD program in dramatic art debuted this fall, after a three-year hiatus in graduate student admissions.

Its faculty include theater/performance scholars from classics, english, rhetoric, comparative literature, African American studies, film, women's studies, and lingusitics.

Classics professor Mark Griffith -- active on the task force that created the new Graduate Group in Dramatic Art and an expert in ancient Greek drama -- is the new chair of dramatic art.

"Theater studies have changed and become more interdisciplinary and inclusive," he explains. "Berkeley, with its unparalleled range of faculty, diverse undergraduate population -- including many fine actors, dancers, and others interested in performance -- and its excellent theater spaces, provides an ideal context for such an interdisciplinary program as both a theory think tank and a theater lab."

New assistant professor Shannon Jackson will soon be followed by two others -- a professor of modern theater and dramatic theory and a director.

The Center for Theater Arts (CTA) continues as the department's performing wing. The traditionally strong dance program and a reinvigorated undergraduate major will continue to be taught by faculty and lecturers active in their professions.
