"This week we're calling ourselves 'Apocalyptic,' said this group of musical, chemistry grad students playing near Sather Gate. It was a Saturday and foot traffic was sparse, but they had already collected $5.25 in a guitar case. The performers -- Ken Brown, vocals; David Huong and Tom McCormick, guitar; Mike McCarthy, trombone; and Adam Moule, on plastic bucket -- started playing together last semester. On Superbowl Sunday, right as the big game was about to start, 30 teenagers and about a dozen mathematicians, teachers and parents gathered on the Berkeley campus -- not to watch football, but to study mathematics. (continues)
