Fiestas Patrias, honoring all the Latin American independence days, coincides with the kickoff of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Noah Berger photo.

Festivities included an art display, spoken word and dance performances, contests, a march through Berkeley streets led by a mariachi band and a midnight reenactment of "los gritos," a tradition honoring the start of the Mexican Revolution.
