Black Staff Dialogue Continues Online
About 50 members of the Berkeley staff -- or roughly 5 percent of the 900 black staff employees -- took part in the Feb. 23 evening event "Exploring the Impact of a Post-209 Environment: A Black Staff Dialogue."
The Staff Affirmation Action office is collating and analyzing information gathered at the dialogue. Those who were unable to attend the two-hour conversation still have the opportunity to participate, by submitting comments anonymously online, from www.uhs.berkeley.edu/impact on the University Health Services Web site.
"I'm hopeful we will get more responses, in order to have a representative sampling of staff experiences," said Faye Fields, chairwoman of the Black Staff and Faculty Organization. "It will bring credibility to this whole effort."
Comments submitted electronically or through the mail by Thursday, March 30, will be included in a final report being prepared for Sandra Haire, assistant vice chancellor for human resources; Faculty Equity Associate Charles Henry; and the Black Staff and Faculty Organization. The report will identify issues, but not individuals. All comments, including electronic submissions, will be anonymous.
This effort is sponsored by the Black Staff and Faculty Organization, Human Resources, the Staff Affirmative Action Office and University Health Service's CARE Services for Faculty and Staff. For information, contact the Staff Affirmative Action Office at 642-5002.
Capps Memorial Set for March 13
A memorial service honoring Assistant Professor Lisa Capps will be held at 4 p.m., Monday, March 13, in the Great Hall of the Faculty Club. Capps, a faculty member in the Department of Psychology, died Feb. 7. For information, call 642-5292.
Fee for Tower Visits to Increase
The cost for elevator trips to Sather Tower's observation deck will increase, effective March 13.
Admission for children, ages 3 to 11 will be $1; ages 12-17, $1.50; and over 18, $2. Faculty, staff and students with current identification continue to ride for free. Members of the alumni association, UC retirees and seniors 65 and over will pay $1.50. Visiting school groups will continue to receive a special discount rate of $.25 per person.
The increase was needed to cover the cost of adding an additional staff person. The new lobby host will welcome visitors, answer questions, sell elevator tickets and check backpacks, luggage and other large bags for visitors during their ascent to the observation deck.
Short-Term Parking: Bowditch Lot
For no additional fee, Parking and Transportation has opened a new short-term parking area for faculty/staff and central campus permit holders as of Feb. 7. The Bowditch Lot, between Channing and Haste, is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday thru Friday. It is available on a temporary basis for 4 to 6 months, due to relocation of office trailers in relation to construction projects.
An Ampco attendant will staff the lot between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., and will give time-stamped permits to entering vehicles. Space is first-come, first-serve. The permits will be valid for four hours only and must be displayed on the car's dashboard, along with a valid faculty/staff or central campus permit.

Office of Human Resources To Be Closed March 15
The Office of Human Resources will be closed Wednesday, March 15, for an all-day staff meeting. This meeting is part of the continuing effort to transform human resources operations in response to campus needs and the changing work environment. The weekly job listing bulletin will be mailed one day later than usual (campus deadlines remain as usual).
