Fulbright applications available

Applications for the Fulbright Scholar Program are available at the Graduate Fellowship Office, 318 Sproul Hall. More than 800 scholarships in more than 130 countries are available.

Untenured faculty and professionals outside academe are encouraged to apply, as well as academic administrators, independent scholars, artists and professionals.

Student dies in ski accident

Sophomore Matthew Redy died April 20 as the result of a ski accident. A service was held April 29 in Southern California.


Translators needed for staff survey

Business and Administrative Services seeks volunteers to assist its English-as-a-second-language employees in filling out a confidential questionnaire on how they feel about their jobs.

The survey will be administered in late May or early June during various times of day including evenings. The unit seeks volunteers fluent in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Laotian, Tagalog and Vietnamese.

Summer engineering institute for working professionals

Engineers and computer scientists will learn about the latest technology research from Berkeley professors June 5 to July 15 at the first Berkeley Summer Engineering Institute.

In 16 courses, each two to five days long, engineers, managers and IT professionals will learn from the creator of the world's smallest semiconductor transistor, the author of a state-of-the-art textbook on digital circuit design and other eminent scientists and engineers.

The institute is a collaboration between the College of Engineering and UC Berkeley Extension.

Quake 2000 disaster exercise is May 25

Volunteers to play "victims" and other roles are invited to participate in the campuswide disaster exercise, Quake 2000, to be held Thursday, May 25, starting at 9 a.m. A pre-exercise briefing for volunteers will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m, Thursday, May 18, in Zellerbach Playhouse.

Quake 2000 is a simulation of campus response to a major earthquake on the Hayward Fault and will test every facet of the campus emergency response organization. The exercise will involve hundreds of staff and volunteers from across the campus, canine search and rescue, as well as five department operations centers.

Observers are welcome to view field activities occurring north of Valley Life Sciences and at Evans baseball diamond. Emergency Operations Centers are located in the Tang Center and on the lawn south of Sproul Hall.

Advancing environmental education beyond the nature walk

Nature walks and environmental education outside of the classroom can instill an abiding interest in science and in the environment. This is the subject of "Beyond Nature Walks: Advancing Environmental Education," to take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, June 3, at Alumni House.

Garry Brewer, dean of UC Berkeley Extension and professor of environmental policy and management at Berkeley's Energy Resources Group, will head a panel of distinguished environmental educators and advocates.

The event is cosponsored by the Cal Alumni Association and the Yosemite National Institute. The fee is $10. To register call (510) 642-4111; registration will also be available at the door, as space permits.
