Awards: Bowyer, Anantharam, Walrand, Brewer, & Cash

Stuart Bowyer

The Committee on Space Research has chosen Astronomy Professor Stuart Bowyer to receive the Massey Award, an honor given to leaders in space research. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to the development of space research.

COSPAR is an international scientific organization concerned with scientific research carried out with space vehicles, rockets and balloons. The Massey Award is given every two years.

Venkat Anantharam, Jean Walrand

Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Professors Venkat Anantharam and Jean Walrand are winners of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Communications Society Stephen O. Rice Prize Paper Award in the Field of Communications Theory, along with co-authors Nick McKeown and Adisak Mekkittikul. Their paper, "Achieving 100% Thoroughput in an Inupt-Queued Switch," was published in the August 1999 issue of IEEE Transactions on Communications.

Eric Brewer

Eric Brewer, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences, was named to Industry Standard magazine's Net 21, a list of "the most influential people in the Internet economy" published in the April 24 issue. Brewer, also chief technology officer and co-founder of Inktomi Corp., was selected for being "the person most instrumental in establishing the Net's conceptual framework."

John Cash

John Cash, associate vice chancellor for university relations and director of the campus's capital campaign, has been named this year's outstanding fund-raising executive by the National Society of Fund Raising Executives, Golden Gate Chapter.

The society is the professional association for individuals responsible for generating philanthropic support for a wide variety of not-for-profit, charitable organizations.

As director of Berkeley's capital campaign, Cash manages approximately 80 fund-raising professionals and a national organization of 500 volunteers. Since its inception in 1993, the campaign has raised $1.2 billion in private gifts, making Berkeley a powerhouse fund raiser among public institutions nationwide.

Cash has been praised for his exemplary leadership in all aspects of fund raising, from planned giving, corporate and foundation relations to annual programs.

Pamela Cook, community relations manager for the Clorox Company, a corporate funder of the campus, said in her nomination letter for the award: "It is a tribute to John to see the well-run development staff he has built, mentored and managed."

Cash will be accept the award Nov. 10 at the society's 2000 National Philanthropy Day awards luncheon in San Francisco.
