A move too big for Bekins

For nearly 65 years UC Printing Services (UCPS) has occupied the building at 2120 Oxford St., across from the west entrance to campus. This summer UCPS will relocate its staff of 167 and its eight multicolor presses, including the behemoth pictured above. The move, nine months in the making, will increase the department’s workspace by 20,000 square feet. Its new location will be the Marchant Building at 6701 San Pablo Ave., where the cities of Berkeley, Oakland, and Emeryville converge.

Transporting heavy printing presses is a bit more involved than contacting a moving company. The whole process takes six to eight weeks, beginning with several weeks for disassembly and repairs, a few days for moving, and three to four weeks for reassembly and testing. The department has gone to enormous lengths to ensure that service to its customers (including nine UC campuses) continues uninterrupted. Printing Services plans to be settled into its new digs by September, with an open house to follow later in the fall.
