Excellence in Management nominations due Feb. 25

The Berkeley Staff Assembly's Excellence in Management award, now in its 21st year, provides an opportunity for career employees to acknowledge the exemplary contributions of their managers and supervisors. This year's theme, "Embracing the Inevitable . . . Change," recognizes those supervisors and managers who are addressing the needs of their units as a whole, as well as those of individual employees, to navigate successfully current and impending changes in the workplace.

The award is open to employees at all levels who have had management or supervisory responsibilities for at least one year in their current positions. Nominations must originate from staff directly supervised by the nominee and include supporting signatures from at least one-half of these staff. Nominations must be received by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25; award recipients will be announced in April. A nomination form may be downloaded from the BSA website.

March 2 deadline to apply for UC Regents' staff-advisor post

UC's Office of the President is considering applications for the next staff advisor-designate to the UC Regents; the position's term runs July 2009 through June 2011. The staff-advisor program, now in its fourth year, allows for two staff and/or non-Senate academic employees to participate in open sessions of designated committees of the board. The staff advisors bring the voice and perspective of staff and non-Senate academic employees to board deliberations.

To learn more about the program, visit universityofcalifornia.edu/staffadvisors. Questions about the position or the application process should be directed to Randolph Scott, 987-9996. Application forms will be accepted through Monday, March 2.

Remember to 'personalize' your Calnet ID this month

All campus employees who use their employee ID number as their CalNet ID will need to choose a self-selected CalNet ID during January if they have not done so already. It's estimated that as many as 85 percent of all employees continue to maintain their employee ID as their CalNet ID, a practice that has been identified as a security risk by the campus Identity and Access Management Steering Committee.

To change your CalNet ID, visit https://calnet.berkeley.edu/myi/id/change.

Information Services & Technology urges you to take care in creating your new ID: It will remain your ID even after you leave the university, to be used (for example) when you access benefits or retirement information online. Once you set your new CalNet ID, subsequent changes will be allowed only under special circumstances and by request (for example, a legal name change).

Contact calnet-admin@lists.berkeley.edu with any questions you may have. If, after changing your CalNet ID, you experience any problems logging in to applications or workstations, notify IT staff in your department.

E-mail notice of upcoming campus events

Critic's Choice, the online NewsCenter's ongoing preview of selected campus events, is now available via e-mail. To sign up to receive a list of the coming week's highlights each Monday morning, visit events.berkeley.edu and click on the signup link. If you'd like further details about an event you want to attend, you can click through to the full Web listing; you can also use the site's reminder feature to send yourself an e-mail reminder the day of the event, a few days before, or a full week ahead.

Scholarship offered for UNEX's editorial program

Peachpit Press and UC Berkeley Extension are offering the first annual Marjorie Baer Scholarship for Editorial Excellence. The scholarship covers the full cost of Extension's Professional Sequence in Editing program, the only program of its kind in the Bay Area. The first two scholarships will be awarded in March.

Peachpit Press established the scholarship last year in the name of Marjorie Baer, a longtime executive editor at the publishing house who was known for her skill in training authors and editors.

The Professional Sequence in Editing is a concentrated four-course program, designed for professional editors who want to add skills, as well as for those seeking to make a career change into editorial work. The program includes instruction in grammar, mechanics, and usage, along with copyediting, line editing, and developmental editing.

For more information, and to download an application before the Jan. 30 deadline, visit www.unex.berkeley.edu/editingscholarship.
