Clinton looks out at the sea of more than 2,000 members of the campus community
jammed into Zellerbach Hall for the occasion. During his talk, he recalled
that the first time he came to the Berkeley campus was as a young man in
1971. At the time, Nixon was president and had just imposed wage and price
controls on the economy. Clinton said that memory, of a Republican taking
such an action, showed just how much the world had changed since then.
