In September, Berkeley Vice Chancellor for University Relations Dan Mote became the 27th president of the University of Maryland at College Park.

Mote, 61, spent all but four years of his adult life on the Berkeley campus. After earning his BS, MS, and PhD, he joined the faculty in 1967. In 1971, he received a Distinguished Teaching Award, and in 1988 he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering.

Mote was named vice chancellor in 1991. His duties included fundraising and overseeing government relations, publications and public information. In 1992, he launched the Campaign for a New Century to raise $1.1 billion in private support for the campus by the year 2000. So far, the campaign has raised $812.2 million.
