GIMME SHELTERS

People's Park became a tent city for a few hours May 7 as Berkeley architecture students displayed their semester projects -- while homeless people curiously looked on. The assignment was to build each portable home with simple tools for less than $15. A team of campus and Berkeley community experts evaluated the final designs at the event.

Students used a wide range of easily accessible materials including plastic bags, rope, PVC pipes, umbrellas and clothes hangers. For most, a roll of duct tape was the biggest expenditure. After their shelters were graded, some students gave them away to the people who needed them most.
