Last year, Berkeley received its largest number of freshmen applications ever. This year, applications topped last year's by 10 percent.
Acceptance letters to the Class of 2000 were mailed in March. About 25,000 young hopefuls had applied for about 9,000 of those coveted letters. About 3,500 of those accepted as new freshmen will actually come to Cal to form the millennial class.
Acceptance letters for new transfers went out May 1. Of approximately 6,800 applicants, 2,440 will be chosen to yield about 1,560 arrivals.
Systemwide, UC received applications from 45,939 California high school students seeking admission to the freshman class next fall--an increase of 5.9 percent over last year and the third year in a row UC has received a record number of freshman applications.
