MAKING THE SOUTH SIDE SAFER

In an effort to improve neighborhood safety south of campus, Berkeley officials launched a multifaceted security campaign in late January. The bold effort includes putting more campus police officers on the streets, expanding the campus's popular night safety escort services, improving lighting and installing additional UC emergency telephones.

The campaign is expected to cost the campus more than $350,000.

"Safety is a primary concern for our neighbors on the south side of our campus as well as for the students who reside there," said Berdahl. "We are taking a number of steps that, in partnership with the city of Berkeley, will make the area a safer place."
