05/02/00
Contact: Media Relations
(510) 642-3734

WHAT: A speech by U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright at the University of California, Berkeley's upcoming Commencement Convocation. She will speak about foreign policy and U.S. national security interests.
WHEN: 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2000.
WHERE: The Greek Theater, UC Berkeley.
WHO:

Madeleine Albright is keynote speaker for this event, which honors all graduating seniors. She was invited by the Senior Class Council.

"We really thought Madeleine Albright was phenomenal, the highest-ranking woman in U.S. government. We also thought she represented Berkeley's ideals," said Lisa Delehunt, council president. "She's been a role model to me and other seniors."

Fadia Rafeedie, the top graduating senior, also will speak at the ceremony. The 22-year-old history major will receive the University Medal from Chancellor Robert M. Berdahl.

NOTE: Commencement Convocation, an annual event, includes a colorful procession of academicians robed in full regalia. No diplomas are awarded to students at the ceremony. Instead, they are distributed at more than 50 departmental graduations held throughout May. Only graduating seniors and their guests can obtain tickets to attend Commencement Convocation.

Reporters wishing to cover the event should RSVP and obtain more information from UC Berkeley Media Relations, (510) 642-3734. Security will be in place for the ceremony because of Albright's prominence. The Department of State's Diplomatic Security Service advises against bringing large or numerous personal belongings to the theater, as all objects must be screened and searched before the ceremony begins. The theater will open at 2:45 p.m., and arriving early is encouraged because of these security checks.
