Ceremonies that began May 4 and continue through May 31 include Commencement Convocation this afternoon (Friday, May 17), an event honoring all graduating seniors. They will march into the 6,000-seat Greek Theater in caps and gowns.

The keynote speaker is Olympic gold medalist Jonny Moseley. This year's faculty address will be delivered by Alan Dundes, a noted folklorist and professor of anthropology. Dundes was chosen for the honor by the class of 2002. Shayna Parekh, the top graduating senior and this year's University Medalist, also will speak.

This year's approximately 10,000 graduates are picking up their diplomas at commencement ceremonies being held by their respective schools, colleges and departments.

Among this year's speakers are:

* U.C. Berkeley professor of economics George Akerlof, winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Economics, who addressed graduates in the Economics Department on Thursday.

* Helen Waukazoo, executive director of the Friendship House Association of American Indians, San Francisco, and a member of the Navajo Nation. She will address graduates in Native American Studies at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at the International House Auditorium.

* Paul Mason, executive producer of ABC World News Tonight and keynote speaker for ceremonies at the Graduate School of Journalism at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 18, in the courtyard of Northgate Hall.

* Mark Shields, political commentator, who will speak at History Department commencement at 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 24, at the Greek Theater.

* Sacramento Bee columnist Peter Schrag, speaker for graduates at the Institute of Governmental Studies, where he is a visiting scholar. He will speak at 2 p.m. Friday, May 24, in the Greek Theater.

* Jerry Brown, Oakland Mayor and former California governor, who will be the keynote speaker at commencement ceremonies at the Goldman School of Public Policy at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, in the Faculty Glade.

* Jackie Goldberg, California State Assemblymember for District 45, who is delivering the commencement address for the Sociology Department at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 25, in Zellerbach Auditorium.

* Scott Turow, an attorney and best-selling author, who will address the Boalt Hall law school graduates at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 25, at the Greek Theater.

* Steve McCormick, president and CEO of the Nature Conservancy. He is the speaker for the College of Natural Resources' commencement at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 26, in the Chancellor's Esplanade.

* Tom Siebel, Siebel Systems founder, chair and CEO, who will give the commencement address at the Haas School of Business at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 26, at the Greek Theater.

* Paul G. Hawken, environmentalist, entrepreneur, journalist and author. Co-chair of the Natural Step sustainable development effort, he will address College of Environmental Design graduates at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 26, at the Greek Theater.
