Gayley Road and University Drive resurfacing begins July 6

BERKELEY – Crews will begin work on Tuesday, July 6, to repave Gayley Road from Hearst Ave. to Rimway Road. University Drive, which leads from the East Gate into campus past Evans Hall, will also be resurfaced. Construction on the roads is expected to continue through early August.

Traffic on Gayley Road and access to the campus at East Gate will be interrupted throughout the project. Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes if possible while construction is underway. Access will be managed by flag personnel. Signs in the area will direct pedestrians to access the campus by using the new stairs behind Founder's Rock, the covered stairs between Donner Lab and the Stanley job site, or the south side of East Gate (near Chemistry). Special signage will be posted for disabled access.

During the first two weeks of the project — from approximately July 6th to 16th — crews will prepare the road for a new surface. This work will include grinding up and removing the existing surface, which will be noisy.

Paving is scheduled for the week of July 19. Finishing work (painting new road markings, adjusting manhole covers, etc.) on Gayley Road and University Dr. is scheduled for the week of July 26.

Hours of construction are 7 a.m.-7 p.m. weekdays, in keeping with the City of Berkeley noise ordinance. Most days construction activities will end around 4 p.m. Any necessary weekend work would take place starting at 9 a.m. The project will adhere to regulations concerning safety, dust, dirt, exhaust fumes and storm-water runoff.
