Cal Corps Public Service Center's Annual Community Day of Service. In partnership with local groups, Cal Corps organizes University of California, Berkeley, students, staff, faculty and alumni to volunteer for a day working in East Bay neighborhoods on specific projects.
Kickoff is at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, with volunteers at service sites from approximately 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Volunteers will meet at the Mario Savio steps on Upper Sproul Plaza at UC Berkeley. They will then be divided and sent to various projects around town.
* Strawberry Creek Clean-up: Volunteers will remove trash, clear plants, and spruce up the creek that runs through UC Berkeley. Coordinated by the UC Berkeley Office of Environment, Health, and Safety.
* Strawberry Creek Outlet Restoration: At Eastshore State Park, near the Berkeley Marina, the mouth of Strawberry Creek will be restored by removing invasive plants. Coordinated by Friends of Five Creeks - volunteers protecting and restoring the creeks of North Berkeley, Albany, Kensington and southern El Cerrito and Richmond.
* People's Park Fall Clean-up: Cleaning the garden, repairing benches and repainting trash receptacles. Coordinated by the UC Berkeley Office of Community Relations.
* Pathway Steps Building: At Grizzly Peak Boulevard and Summit Road, near the Lawrence Hall of Science. Railroad-tie steps will be installed to create a new public pathway. Coordinated by the Berkeley Path Wanderers Association (510-540-7223, contact is Charlie Bowen).
