Governing UC conference to be held Friday

"Governing the Academy: Who's the Boss?," a critical examination of the governance of the University of California system and the academy generally. The event is being co-sponsored by the University of California, Berkeley's Institute of Governmental Studies and the Center for Studies in Higher Education.

Conference participants will include professors and former administrators from various UC campuses, administrators outside of the UC system and former state government administrators. They will discuss governance in the context of major issues facing higher education such as funding, access, recruitment and retention, and political scrutiny.

1 - 6 p.m., Friday, Dec. 8

Geballe Room, second floor, Stephens Hall, UC Berkeley

Panelists will include:

  • Velma Montoya, former member of the UC Board of Regents
  • William T. Bagley, former member of the UC Board of Regents
  • Ted Lempert, former California state assemblymember (D-San Mateo/Santa Clara) and former chair of the Assembly's Higher Education Committee
  • Tim Gage, former director of the California Department of Finance
  • Donald Gerth, president emeritus of California State University, Sacramento
  • William M. Zumeta, professor of public affairs and educational leadership and policy studies at the University of Washington
  • Karl S. Pister, former chancellor of UC Santa Cruz and professor emeritus and former dean of engineering at UC Berkeley
  • Lawrence Coleman, vice provost for research and former chair of the UC Academic Senate
