by Gretchen Kell

Berkeley -- Laura D'Andrea Tyson will return to the University of California at Berkeley after serving as President Clinton's top economic advisor, the chair of the campus's Department of Economics confirmed today (Tuesday, Nov. 12).

Robert Anderson, the chair of economics, said Tyson plans to be back at UC Berkeley in January for the start of spring term. She will assume the Class of 1939 chair jointly in the Department of Economics and the Haas School of Business. Tyson, who joined the UC Berkeley faculty in 1977, is a professor of both economics and business administration.

"We're delighted that she will be returning here after four years of outstanding service to the nation," he said. "Professor Tyson is a distinguished and versatile scholar whose interests have ranged from comparative economic systems to international economics to key matters of public policy at the national and international levels."

Tyson heads the National Economic Council. She originally was chair of the President's Council of Economic Advisors.

Anderson added that Tyson is a popular professor with both advanced graduate students and freshmen. She received UC Berkeley's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1982. The coveted award has only been received by four economists since it was initiated 37 years ago.

William Hasler, dean of the Haas School, said that Tyson "has always been a great teacher and, for the past four years, her classroom has included the Cabinet, the Congress and the American people. Her return to Berkeley is wonderful news for both students and faculty."
