Long-serving campus staffers honored

24 September 2003

On Tuesday, Sept. 16, more than 300 Berkeley employees with between 10 and 40 years of service to the campus were honored at a luncheon in Pauley Ballroom sponsored by Chancellor Berdahl and the Office of Human Resources (OHR). This is the third year the event has been held.

The total number of years of service represented by this year’s 665 invitees is 12,245. Three employees were honored for completing 40 years of service: Camille Holser, Library; Harvey Knight, School of Public Health; and Jeanene Pinto, Printing Services. Thirty employees celebrated 35 years of service this year: Teriann Asami-Oki, Dona Bretherick, Robert Cajina, Gwendolyn Cheeseburg, Eleta Cook, Catherine Dinnean, Veronica Eaglin, George Figel, Kelly Haberer, Patricia Hardy, Rosemary Hendrick, Charles Jackson, Quincy Joe, Patricia Klahn, Karen Lawrence, Marjorie Lovejoy, Kathy MacClelland, Gloria McKenzie, Carmen McKines, James Peterson, Kiyoko Phillips, Joyce Putnam, Anne Raftery, Helen,Raymond, Benito Torres, Manuel Vigil, Sheila Wekselbaum, Anne Williams, June Wong, and Terry Yokoyama.

To top off the day, as if it might have been planned, Jesse Jackson was speaking on the steps of Sproul Hall just outside the windows of Pauley Ballroom. A large cheer could be heard from outside at one point during the luncheon, in response to which Haas School of Business Dean Tom Campbell quipped, “Where else would I be competing with Jesse Jackson?”

Vice Chancellor for Business and Administrative Services Horace Mitchell (who celebrates 25 years of service to UC this year) delivered remarks prepared by Chancellor Berdahl, who was unable to attend. “The job is challenging,” Berdahl noted, “but the people are the best.”

Also speaking were Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Affairs Genaro Padilla; Vice Chancellor for Capital Projects Ed Denton; Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education Christina Maslach; ASUC President Kris Cuaresma-Primm; Beth Luke, director of OHR Central/Customer Support; and David Moers, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Human Resources.
