New director of business services for campus is named
Lila Mauro, associate director for procurement services since 2004, has been named director of business services for the campus, with management responsibility for negotiating, acquiring, producing, distributing, storing, and controlling goods and services. Business services processes annual purchases of goods and services valued in excess of $425 million, negotiates and executes all revenue-generating contracts for the campus, manages an equipment inventory of $570 million, and oversees a fleet of 655 vehicles.
Excellence in Management Award nominations due March 9
The Berkeley Staff Assembly is accepting nominations for the campus's 19th annual Excellence in Management Award. The theme for 2006-07 is "Leading by Mentorship and Example." BSA seeks to honor managers who exemplify outstanding professional qualities and who intentionally guide and support staff in developing their own skills and aspirations. Nominations are due no later than 4 p.m., Friday, March 9; the awards ceremony will be held at noon Thursday, May 10, at International House's Chevron Auditorium.

HR to offer additional sessions of 'Retiring From UC' workshop
Additional sessions of the Human Resources workshop "Retiring From UC" are open for enrollment. The workshop provides an overview of benefits paid by the UC Retirement Plan - including lifetime monthly retirement income or a lump-sum cashout, disability benefits, survivor income, death benefits, and the Capital Accumulation Provision for some. Participants learn about available retirement-planning tools and steps to take during the retirement process. The workshop also covers retiree health benefits, coordination between the retiree medical plan and Medicare, and more.
Spring workshops will be held on Wednesday, March 7 (9 a.m.-noon), and Thursday, June 7 (1:30-4:30 p.m.) - both in 150 University Hall; the same material will be presented each time. Two staffers launch campus bone-marrow drive
Staff members Dewey St. Germaine of ethnic studies and Eugenia Foon of the College of Engineering are spearheading a campus bone-marrow-donor drive. The donor sign-up will be held Wednesday, Feb. 28 (10 a.m.-4 p.m., in 120 Bechtel Engineering Center, next to Evans Hall, and 10 a.m.- 3 p.m., Chinquapin Room, 4th floor, MLK Jr. Student Union) and on Thursday, March 1 (10 a.m.- 3 p.m., Heller Lounge, MLK Jr. Student Union).
"I'm doing this to help out my friend's 2 1?2-year-old son, Harrison Leonardo, who is fighting leukemia," says St. Germaine. "It is also personal for Eugenia, as her brother-in-law, Barry Foon, who has non-Hodgkins lymphoma, is also in need of a bone-marrow transplant."
Participants will be asked to fill out paperwork and provide a cheek swab, used for tissue-typing, which determines matches. In order to be a match, a bone-marrow donor must have the identical Human Leukocyte Antigens (HLA) type) as the recipient; matches typically involve persons of similar ethnic background. Harrison Leonardo is Filipino and Caucasian; his most likely match would be from a donor of Filipino, Caucasian, Asian, or mixed-race descent. Barry Foon is of Chinese descent and will most likely need a donor of Chinese or other Asian descent.
