WHAT:

A keynote speech by Federal Communications Commissioner Michael K. Powell at a one-day "Regulating on the Technological Edge" workshop at the University of California, Berkeley's Haas School of Business.

The speech is open to the public. It follows a day of workshops - for academics, regulators and industry leaders - geared toward regulation of emerging technologies.

WHEN: Friday, October 20, 2000, 4 p.m.
WHERE: Arthur Andersen Auditorium, Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley. The Haas School is located on Gayley Road between Hearst Avenue and Bancroft Way, at the east end of campus.
WHO: Powell, who joined the FCC as a commissioner in 1997, previously was chief of staff to the antitrust division of the Department of Justice. Before that, he worked at the Washington, D.C., law firm of O'Melveny & Meyers LLP, where he focused on regulatory matters involving telecommunications, antitrust and employment law.

SPONSOR: The workshop is sponsored by the Center for Telecommunications and Digital Convergence, a research and outreach center housed at the Haas School's Fisher Center for the Strategic Use of Information Technology. The center is designed to help business and governmental organizations understand the sweeping developments in the telecommunications markets.

NOTE: Reporters planning to attend should contact Ute Frey at the Haas School at (510) 642-0342 or frey@haas.berkeley.edu.
