BERKELEY – One of the fiercest rivalries in college football resumes this Saturday when Cal's Golden Bears travel across the Bay to take on the Stanford Cardinal in the 106th edition of the Big Game.
Cal captured the coveted Stanford Axe last year with a 30-7 victory at Memorial Stadium, returning the trophy to Berkeley after a seven-year absence. But there's even more than history and bragging rights at stake in this year's Big Game.
With a 6-6 record so far this year, the Golden Bears need a season-ending victory Saturday to ensure a winning record and earn the program's first postseason bowl appearance since the 1996 Aloha Bowl.
The Bears are fired up following their 54-7 rout of Washington last Saturday that set a school record for total yardage. Fans will be fired up as well after a week of rallies, parties and contests, culminating in Friday night's bonfire rally at the Greek Theatre.
