History
The Institute of East Asian Studies is an Organized Research Unit that serves as the focal point for all of UC Berkeley programs related to East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. The Institute comprises seven area centers: the Center for Chinese Studies, the Center for Japanese Studies, the Center for Korean Studies, Center for Southeast Asia Studies, the P.Y. and Kinmay W. Tang Center for Silk Road Studies, Numata Center for Buddhist Studies, as well as the Berkeley APEC Studies Center, a Publications office, and several related programs. Currently the Institute has approximately 100 core UCB faculty associates.
